Cagiva

The history

Cagiva is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer. It was founded in 1950 by Giovanni Castiglioni in Varese, originally producing small metal components. They set out on the motor market in 1978 with the takeover of the Aermacchi plant in Varese which at that time was owned by Harley -Davidson. In 1978 Cagiva entered the motorcycle business with two racing motorcycles ridden by Gianfranco Bonera and Marco Lucchinelli. In its history, Cagiva won races in Dakar and Motocross competitions, as well as in Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The first machines were called HD-Cagiva. Aermacchi blocks were initially used.

After the incorporation of Ducati engines were also used. Cagiva improved the Ducati engines strongly and within a short time Ducati became an important brand again. Moto Morini, MV Agusta, TGM and Husqvarna were also added to the group.

Acquisition and name change

Since 1985, Cagiva is the largest engine manufacturer outside of Japan. In 1996 TPG took over the majority of the Ducati shares of Cagiva, so Ducati became more independent again.

In 1998 TPG became fully owner of Ducati, so Cagiva went further to the brand Cagiva. Where the names Husqvarna and MV Agusta would initially only come back as a type indication, but in 1999 the company name became official MV Agusta S.p.A. Motorcycles have now been produced under the names MV Agusta and Husqvarna.

MV Agusta was taken over again in 2008 by Harley-Davidson. Harley Davidson, restructured it and released new models, but sold it in August 2010 to the Castiglioni family. The Cagiva Mito was the first motor of Valentino Rossi, and won 9 times the MotoGP world champion. In 1994 Rossi got a factory Mito.

The Mito

During the 1990s the Mito was the arch rival of Aprilia's AF1 125 FUTURA and later the RS125, a comparable two-stroke 125 cc race version. In 2012, the production of new Mitos was suspended, due to ever stricter environmental emission requirements. The last produced Mito SP525s were white in color and personally signed by MV Agusta CEO Giovanni Castiglioni.
